About The Beldings Ground Squirrel
These ground squirrels, AKA Sage Rats, are known by the farmers and ranchers as a crop destroying pest. They burrow into the ground of alfalfa fields leaving large dirt mounds and destroying acres of crops. One Sage Rat can consume 14 lbs of alfalfa in their time out of hibernation. They leave large holes and attract other ground dwelling critters like the badger which leaves even larger holes that can be devastating to livestock. The litters of young rats usually appear around mid to late April which can increase the volume of rats by the thousands.
From about the size of a small chipmunk to as big as a 16 oz can of Coke, they can provide hours of great shooting.
